It sounds to me like you need to give cotton wicks a try. Silica is a pretty good wicking material, but when it comes to flavor, silica is far from ideal. Cotton almost completely changed vaping for me (I'm not kidding at all).

a fresh wick and coil always taste great, way better than a used coil. so when you get the disposables they last a while and you toss them so basically your vaping the better half of the rig and tossing the rest... i have had a few early Blu disposables taste like garbage right off the bat. but they did get better about that in recent times.

I've given unboiled cotton wicks a try and it really gave off some cotton-y tastes and send my asthma in a frenzy, but I hope to try boiled cotton sometime soon, I have a feeling it'd be much better.

i get my wick from this vendor i have tried a bunch of different vendors this one is really good and the price is even better.

It's been suggested before, and I'm pretty sure I'll regret suggesting it again... Try a decent carto in a decent tank. Better yet, try several different cartos in a good tank. Sure there is an occasional bad carto just like anything else, but the vast majority work very well, with very little fuss if you prime them properly.
