If you do change the coil, make sure you thoroughly prime it prior to putting it into the tank. The cotton should glisten like a slushy drink. A few drops won't cut it. Also lower the wattage setting until the coil is broken in properly...maybe half of a tank full. Then you can reset your wattage to a higher setting.

Sounds like you didn't prime the coil properly and have the wattage set too high maybe. Pop in a new coil, prime the .... out of it and run the mod at 50-65 watts. Increase watts if needed later.
