Sounds to me like your button has gone bad. If it is new (within a week) contact the vendor you got it from and see if it is still under warranty. If so just exchange it. Other wise you may need to buy a new one.

I would think that as long as it's not firing and burning up all your juice then it should be fine. It is, after all, just a display LED for show.

Sounds like the connection aren't making contact. Two things - the battery center post might have to be 'pulled up'. Easy does it - you don't want to break any of the internal connections....
