I have not tried that method. However, I do know that some vapor from certain eliquids that I use tend to "linger" for a few minutes. When the house that we are renting was for sale last year, I had a cinnamon roll eliquid that I really enjoyed, and noticed that the scent seemed to carry over for a short while.

There's nothing burning, the coil is fine. I tried doing it another way - took in a big mouth-full (I'm a mouth hitter) and then immediately let it out as a tight cloud. Then sniffed that. Same burning plastic smell.
