To avoid this you should ALWAYS prime your coil, meaning add some E Juice directly to the cotton inside the coil before assembling the tank.

I think flavour fatigue is the main reason for what people call 'Vapers Tongue', when vapers can't taste any flavour in their e-liquids. We are essentially bombarding our taste-buds with relatively strong flavours all day and sometimes I think we just need to give them a rest.

Was it a burnt taste or just bad? If it was burnt I'd suggest putting a few drops of liquid on top of the coil (not into the hole of course) and letting it sit a filled tank for an hour, at least that's what I do, if it was just a bad taste, get some better juice.

Might want to go to a local B&M vape shop. Could call first and see if they have flavors you can test. Taking your equip. with you,test their juice and maybe talk to them about your problem. At least you might find a juice you may like and know how it should taste. You might even find out some tips on how to use your equip..

One other thing is that I'm not sure about is the smell. I assumed that my liquids would have a different smell to them, but they all have a similar smell to them.

Lots of variable can turn a good juice bad.. you covered some but how was your air-flow set? Did you try different voltages? Did you try different combinations of voltages with different airflows together? What material is your drip tip? These things matter and, you'll learn not any single combination is right...
