Many e-cigarettes now allow you to adjust the airflow in the device to help control how much vapour the device produces . Whilst a useful feature, having the airflow closed too much will mean you’re inhaling a more concentrated vapour which could cause a harsh hit. Try opening your airflow more and see if this helps.

Depends on what you mean by "rough". If you are using a tank system, it could be that the coil/wick/polyfil has dried out some. You may want to do a short pull on the tank without firing the unit to bring some eliquid into the wick/polyfil, etc.

So 28ga 4/5 on cotton? Subohm? You may need to do what Thrasher recommends and start with a lower wattage vape to get the throat hit down for a few minutes before hitting the big boy.

When I was using a cheapo battery with a Protank II I'd get something similar. To me, it'd taste like ammonia. Not pleasant. I think the wicks were well saturated and the coil wasn't getting hot enough fast enough. Before the liquid would vaporize I think some of it would cook and maybe scorch a little.
