Keeping it upright should help a bit with leaking, but it's not a guarantee. Too thin of a juice or if air pressure changes, it is going to leak, every tank will. To clear it, cover the air holes with a paper towel or something and gently blow through the tip.

I destroyed the fire button on an old stick by having it constantly fall from an upright position, make sure you use some sort of holder, like a heavy glass or something, if it tends to fall over often.

If you must place it on it's side, closing the airflow will help keep it from leaking. It doesn't always stop leaking, but it can help in the right conditions. If it still leaks, it will be much harder for the liquid to leak out of the tank, instead it collects in the airflow chamber. Then just use the towel trick ScottP mentioned.

I recently started cutting off the tops of 30ml juice bottles with a stanley knife. They work really well for housing my atomizers. Knock them and they don't tip over. They actually work a lot better than i thought they would. That is until i realised i like to see my atomizers all lined up. So now i don't bother with the bottles.
