The link between Ohms and vapor
Back when electronic cigarettes were first introduced on the market there was no such thing as sub ohm vaping. Many of the initial atomizers and cartomizers had resistances between 2 – 3 ohms and they were designed to replicate the feeling of tobacco cigarettes to the last detail.
Some people prefer higher Ohm resistances
There are still people out there who prefer vaping on above ohm resistances, and their number is probably greater than that of e-smokers using sub ohm devices. While the amount of vapor produced is not as massive as with a sub ohm resistance, some people are more than satisfied with the whole experience and wouldn't trade it for something else.

Their circuitry is installed with various safety measures, such as the prevention of electric shorts that could damage your battery. However, this doesn’t mean regulated mods are completely safe. As with any electronic device, malfunction is always a possibility, and it is important that you make sure you have a quality mod that is handled with the utmost care.
What is mechanical mod?
Mechanical mods are generally used by more experienced vapers. Unlike regulated mods, they have no circuits so wattage/voltage cannot be adjusted. This makes keeping them safe a lot more complicated. The battery sends all of its power to the coil and as the battery weakens, and so does the voltage received by the coil.

If the circuit is shorting, your battery is at serious risk of damage or catching a light. Another important safety measure for using mechanical mods is to make sure that the air vents work. If the battery is compromised, these air holes allow heat and gasses to escape the device.

Variable voltage is all about playing with the voltage until it's just right for the juice your are vaping and the coil it's being vaped upon. It's kind of like TV volume. I like it turned up a little and my wife turns it down. I think it's a result of my standing in front of a drummer all those years.

Here's a calculator for calculating wattage. Just enter ohms and volts and you'll get wattage. By using diff ohms you can adjust the wattage BUT you don't want to go too low as you may damage your batts.

Unless you're testing under load or using a VWPV, you can assume you're around 2 watts less than you think, considering the voltage drop under load is often anywhere from 0.2 to 0.6 volts depending on the mod /delivery/battery combo, IME.
