Because it relies solely on heat detection, and vapour isn’t hot, it’s very unlikely that vaping even directly into a heat alarm would set it off. An optical alarm is the most likely to set off the smoke detector because of the way it detects smoke.

Unlike conventional cigarettes, these battery-powered versions create vapor as a byproduct, not smoke. Despite this, they can still set off a fire alarm if you blow vapor directly into it. All smoke alarms are sensitive to small, airborne particles.Feb 28, 2018

Why do smoke detectors go off for no reason?

So the short answer is yes, in offices, electronic cigarettes can set off the fire alarm/smoke detector. Although there is a distinct difference between cigarette smoke and vapor, most employers ban both inside their buildings. If you vape in the restroom of an office building, you will very likely set off the smoke alarm.

How to stop false or nuisance smoke alarms?

Jan 12, 2022 · However, whenever smoke particles or vapors mess up with the flow of the beam of light, the alarm sets off! The typical cigarettes that produce smoke are very likely to trigger a photoelectric fire alarm. However, if vapes, a noticeable amount of vaping fumes must be present right below the alarm to set it off.

What happens if your fire alarm won't shut off?

So, if you vape directly underneath one of these devices, you could easily set it off. Ionization smoke detectors Then there are the ionization-based devices. These work in a similar way in that they rely on disruption to a signal. These devices create …

Will vaping set off smoke detectors?

The short answer is yes, if you chain vape right next to or very close to a smoke detector, you’re going to set it off. Then the alarm starts and you’ll be lucky if it shuts off in less than five minutes.

Vapor Versus Smoke

We can hear your first question: if vapor isn’t smoke, how come smoke alarms go off when I'm vaping?

Types of Smoke Detectors

There are two different types of alarms: ionic and photoelectric. They work differently, but because they can both detect vapor, we're going to discuss them.

The Experiment

We did a short vaping smoke detector test. We gathered our supplies, including our two vaping smoke alarm devices, and went into a room that measures roughly 1350 cubic feet.

Heat Based Detectors

These are not seen very much anymore in crowded or sensitive areas as typically they take longer to trigger the alarm as it’s relying only on heat from a fire reaching it. You’re more likely to find a heat alarm in a kitchen than in a hotel room.

Optical Alarms

An optical alarm is the most likely to set off the smoke detector because of the way it detects smoke. Inside the alarm are optical light beams and when smoke, or vapour enters the alarm and breaks the beam, the alarm will sound.

Ionization Detectors

Ionization smoke detectors work differently to optical alarms as they use a small amount of radioactive material which works alongside charged plates to create a current between them. The idea is that the air between them in this setup is ‘Ionized’ and a current forms between the two plates.

Ask the Hotel Directly

Some hotels have no issue at all with you vaping in the rooms, whilst others have rules where they forbid vaping entirely inside the premises, the same as smoking.

What are the different types of smoke detectors?

There are three commonly used smoke detectors available, and the likelihood of vapour being detected as smoke by them depends on which kind is being used. These models are: 1 Heat Alarms 2 Ionisation-Based Detectors 3 Photoelectric-Based Detectors

What is a photoelectric detector?

Photoelectric detectors use optical light beams to detect smoke in their vicinity. If there’s enough smoke surrounding the detector, the light beam is broken and the alarm is triggered. There’s less risk of this happening with vapour than there is with smoke, but it’s still possible. If there’s enough vapour present to break the beam, ...

Can you vape around a smoke detector?

There’s no firm rule for using vape pens around smoke detectors. Some detectors may be triggered, some may not. The best thing to do is judge each circumstance on its own merits. If you produce a lot of vapour and you’re in very close vicinity to a smoke detector in a crowded or sensitive area, it’s best to not vape.

Why do smoke detectors go off?

Optical smoke alarms go off when particles scatter a beam of infrared light onto a light detector.

Can you smoke outside?

That being said, it’s highly recommended that you only smoke outdoors. According to the National Fire Protection Association, smoking materials—including cigarettes, cigars, and pipes—ignited an estimated 17,200 homes in 2014. These fires resulted in 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries, and $426 million in property damage.

Can smoke detectors detect fire?

The short answer is yes, it can. Modern smoke detectors are more sensitive than older models because smoking indoors is prohibited in most public buildings today. Since cigarette smoke no longer swirls in the hallways, today’s detectors are designed with greater sensitivity so they can sense a developing fire as fast as possible.
