In fact, it's not the vape as a whole that is behind fires or explosions – the most common cause is the battery.

What type of vapes explode?

Any brand or type of vape pen with a lithium-ion battery could theoretically explode in use. If there is a defect with the battery or if the device is used incorrectly, such as using the wrong charger or getting the battery wet, it could lead to a fire and explosion.

Why is my vape catching on fire?

Vape fires can occur when there is a malfunction in the battery. The vape battery can fail if the battery discharges for too long, thereby causing the battery to overheat. The vape battery can also catch fire when the vaporizer mod draws power beyond the safe range of the battery, similarly causing it to overheat.

Don’t mix different brands of batteries, use batteries with varying amounts of control, or use old & new batteries together. 4 Charge your vape on a clean, flat surface away from anything which could easily catch fire & someplace you can see it. Not on a sofa or pillow at which it is more prone to overheat or get turned on accidentally. 5 Safeguard your vape from extreme temperatures by not leaving it in direct sunlight or in your automobile on a cold night. Loose batteries carried in pockets or purses

A large majority of “vaping explosions” are in reality caused by loose batteries carried in pants pockets, not by vaping devices at all. FDA Center for Tobacco Products researchers found that 77.3 percent of burns caused by vaping accidents were to the upper leg and lower trunk—the location of the hip pocket.

Mislabeled batteries and low-resistance coils

There is a limit to the amperage a device can draw from a battery, and those numbers may be exaggerated by battery manufacturers, wholesalers or distributors. Sometimes batteries are marked “30 amp,” for example, when the battery is only capable of handling 30 amps for a few seconds, rather than for continuous use.

Counterfeit, low-quality, and damaged batteries

Batteries are mass-produced and tested in the factory. Those that don’t meet the standards for direct sale to electronics manufacturers are sometimes sold to resellers, who rewrap them with different brand names and sell them for other uses. The best vaping batteries are the highest-quality ones from the major battery manufacturers.

Charging problems and best practices

It is possible to accidentally overcharge batteries, especially if you use a charger meant for a different kind of battery. If you use a charger intended for large, high-capacity batteries to charge a small vape pen, for example, it can create instability in the battery cell.

Why is my mod battery burning?

If the plastic coating of your battery has come off or is scratched, exposing the metal below, you need to STOP using it. The exposed metal inside the scratch can act as a positive connection and constantly fire the battery when it is inside your mod, and this can cause overheating, venting, and fires.

You are sub-ohming with a hybrid mechanical mod

Don’t do it. You probably shouldn’t even use a hybrid to begin with unless you’re a super duper vape nerd who just wants to try every type of vape there is, in which case you’ll probably have enough knowledge to not cause an explosion.

You are sub-ohming without checking your coils using a multimeter

Multimeters are not expensive and as a bonus, not only will you avoid blowing your face off, you’ll also get better performance since you won’t be guessing any more.

You overcharge your batteries

While it seems like almost every explosion is caused by dangerously low sub-ohm vaping, overcharging batteries can in rare cases also cause them to burst.

You let batteries touch each other or metal objects

Not totally relevant since this won’t cause your mod to explode in your face, but it will cause a fire, which can really suck if you put the batteries in your pocket with your keys or loose change.

Granted. That's still not... alot... It's a few... but comparatively? I mean..... is it still trouble if the battery part has a hole in the metal, a vent hole as most mechanical mods have now? Were these older mods, cheaper mods?

Spencer87 Ultra Member Verified Member ECF Veteran

Batteries also swell when they vent, possibly blocking the vent holes (or so I read...) Anywho, I've read enough stories to not take them with a grain of salt. Better safe than sorry. If you educate yourself well on the physics batteries, you'll understand enough to know that they can and do explode. So can cell phones, laptops, etc.

Mechanical mod design needs a major overhaul. Most mechanicals utilize a bottom firing button. Unless the button is recessed, the button will need to be locked each time it is set down or there is a risk of auto-firing the battery.

What happens if your mod hits the floor?

If your mod hit the floor, it’s possible that some of the internal components got damaged or dislodged. The chipsets used in these devices can be delicate and vapers tend to treat their boxes like bricks and not bone China. They’re capable of taking a beating, but over time things can get knocked out of place. If none of the other points on our check list work for you, the issue may be internal, which means it’s definitely the time to talk to a professional and hope they can fix it.
