How do I calculate what size wire I need?

Choosing the proper wire size is crucial. This ensures that all the areas that your wires will receive the necessary amount of electricity according to their need. There are various ways to calculate the size of wire you will need to properly wire the building that you want.

What determines which size wire to use for a breaker?

There are various ways that you can use to determine which size wire to use for a breaker. Here are some factors that we think you should maintain when choosing the correct wire for a breaker in a building:

What size wire is needed for a breaker?

There is a mininum wire size which is requiredbased on the circuit breaker rating. That size is #4 copper or #2 aluminum.

What would be the number of a 55A circuit breaker?

By the way, if the circuit was 55A (breaker 60A) that would be #6Cu/#4Al.

What is the drop of 6cu/4al?

OK. The result is 6cu/4al with 2.29% drop, which is smaller than our "minimum mandatory" size above -- so we must use the minimum mandatory.
