Too much or too little cotton will result in burnt dry cotton in/on the coil and wet cotton outside the coil. The size (ID) of the coil, won't matter if you are still using the wrong amount of cotton.

Too much cotton. If you run it at lower Watts it shouldn't give you dry burns. This usually happens 'cause the wick can't keep up with your coil at higher temperatures. It can't get wet as fast as you're "burning liquid". So, you either run it at lower Watts, or you re-wick with less cotton.
