What is Kanthal wire?

Kanthal wire is a ferritic iron-chromium-aluminum alloy with good resistance to oxidation. It is commonly used for vaping in straight wattage mode. Kanthal is a great place to start if you are just getting into rebuilding, dripping, etc. It is easy to work with, yet stiff enough to hold its shape when formed into coils—which comes into play during the wicking process. It is extremely popular as a primary wire when building single-wire coils.

Is nichrome better than Kanthal?

Nichrome behaves very much like Kanthal, but has lower resistance and heats faster. It is easy to coil and holds its shape well when wicking. Nichrome has a lower melting temperature than Kanthal, so you need to be careful when dry burning your coils—they will burn open if you aren’t careful.

What are the characteristics of wire?

These are the diameter (or gauge) of the wire, its resistance, and the ramp time of different materials.

What is wire gauge?

Wire gauge. The first basic characteristic of any wire is the actual diameter of the wire. It is commonly called the wire “gauge” and expressed as a numerical value. The actual diameter for each wire isn’t really important. What matters is that as the wire gauge number increases, the wire diameter gets smaller.

What gauge wire is used for a single strand coil?

The actual diameter for each wire isn’t really important. What matters is that as the wire gauge number increases, the wire diameter gets smaller. For example, 26 gauge (or 26g) is thinner than 24 gauge but thicker than 28 gauge. Some of the most common gauges used for single-strand coil builds are 28, 26, and 24 , and thinner wire used in the exterior of Clapton coils is usually between 40 and 32 gauge. There are others of course, and even odd number gauges.

What is ramp up time?

Ramp-up time is the time your coil takes to reach the temp needed for vaporizing e-juice. Ramp time is generally more noticeable with exotic multi-strand wire coils like Claptons, but, as wire size increases, ramp time can also become more apparent with simple single wire coils.

What is temperature control mod?

In basic terms, temperature control mods rely on a characteristic of your vaping wire to detect when to regulate the current and wattage delivered to the coil. Wires suitable for TC are chosen because of their Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (TCR).

What is nichrome used for?

Like kanthal, nichrome is used for heating elements in a wide variety of products, such as hair dryers, toasters and space heaters. Nichrome is also common in kilns used to fire pottery.

Is nichrome better than Kanthal?

The primary quality of nichrome that makes it attractive for vaping is the fact that, for a given gauge of wire, nichrome has a lower resistance than kanthal. That means it’ll operate at a higher wattage, and it also means it’ll heat up more quickly than a similar kanthal coil.

What is the best material for sub ohm coils?

When you’re shopping for sub-ohm tank coils, kanthal and stainless steel are the materials you’re most likely to see. Compared to kan thal, stainless steel has a slightly lower resistance and a slightly faster ramp-up time for a given wire gauge.

Why is temperature control important in vaping?

The main purpose of temperature control vaping is that it helps you avoid dry hits. Well, you can also do that yourself by vaping at a reasonable wattage and remembering to refill your tank. In that sense, temperature control vaping is an interesting gimmick, but it’s completely unnecessary for most people.

What is temperature control?

Temperature control is probably the most important innovation in vaping since the first variable voltage/variable wattage devices. It involves setting a maximum temperature for the vape that the coil will not exceed.

How does temperature control work?

Temperature control or TC works by using a notion called the thermal coefficient. The thermal coefficient is a property of certain materials to have their electric resistance increases or decrease depending on the temperature. Therefore by reading the resistance multiple times a second, the mod is able to also precisely estimate coil temperature.

What do I need to start using Temp Control?

To experiment temperature control you need two things: a box mod that’s TC enabled and a coil made from Nickel, Titanium or Stainless Steel.

How to vape in temperature control mode?

Most TC enables box mods have predefined profiles for Nickel (Ni), Titanium (Ti) and Stainless Steel (SS). Knowing the material your coil is built from will help you select the correct profile. Note that it is extremely important to use the appropriate setting for the best results.

Setting the right vaping temperature

Setting the right vape temperature might seem a bit tricky at first. However once you get the hang of it you’ll see it’s a very easy process. Most people vape between 392°F - 480°F (200 - 250°C), as this gives the best results in terms of vapor quality and flavor.

Is stainless steel coil safe?

None of the more commercially-available and well-known options do though, and that’s what matters. The fact is that stainless steel coils are strong, durable, heat-tolerant, and safe to use for vaping devices.

What temperature does stainless steel melt?

To be more precise, stainless steel has a melting point that is somewhere between 2400 and 2750 degrees Fahrenheit. Obviously, you never reach those temperatures when you’re cooking over a stove, and you certainly don’t come close to exceeding that tolerance when your pan goes into the oven.

Is stainless steel good for cooking?

For that reason, stainless steel is considered an ideal material for pots and pans and other cooking tools.

How hot can nickel be?

The good news in that regard is that nickel also has a high tolerance for heat, being safe at temperatures up to 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Here’s the thing: vaping devices don’t actually reach those temperatures – though I suppose there could be some custom-designed devices or little-known units that do.

Is vaping safer than smoking?

Sure, the best scientific evidence suggests that vaping is perhaps 95% safer than using tobacco, but the very newness of the technology means that they have not yet been any long-term studies to conclusively prove anything. Depapillation of the tongue, similar to that from a Nickel allergy.

I know theres many discussion about this but i cant seem to find a perfect answer. My question is WHICH IS THE SAFEST FOR VAPING? I have been using power mode for sometime now and i want to enter temp control. Nickel had issues with leeching into juice, titanium has tiO2. What do i do? How often shud i change the coil?

MunkMunk Full Member

Just for sharing... i only uses SS 316L for tc mode...very smooth in terms of taste.

It may be that at low temparatures these wires don't emit anything. I use temp control exclusively and keep wire temperature below 450 degrees.

i prefer ss over ti but having problem with tc lately. kanthal is all great but you do miss the temp protection and no burn hits.

Is stainless steel coil safe?

Everything I've been able to find indicates that stainless steel is at least as safe as any other wire you might use for coils, if not definitively safer. People are swearing by SS workability, durability and clean taste. From what I can gather, it's not all that great on energy efficiency though.

Is titanium wire hard?

Having used titanium wire in chainmaille work, it is VERY springy and quite hard. I should imagine that you would have to torch it extensively to get it to hold shape.

What is surgical stainless steel?

The most common "surgical steels" are 316 stainless and 440 and 420 stainless steels. There is no formal definition on what constitutes a "surgical stainless steel", so product manufacturers apply the term to refer to any grade of corrosion resistant steel. If you're thinking 316 SS, usually Chromium and Nickel are involved 316 stainless steel, also referred to as "Marine Grade Stainless Steel", is a chromium, nickel, molybdenum alloy of steel. 440 SS and 420 SS, also called "Cutlery Stainless Steel", are high carbon steels alloyed with chromium.#N#Titanium, however, is something being looked at.. But its resistance is fairly low, I do believe, and would take a temp controlled chip to work good. I believe there is such a chip coming out (GG? I think?)
