What does wattage mean in vaping?

To put it another way, watts is essentially how much power your vape produces and voltage is how much power is put through the device. So, as you increase the wattage the voltage also increases and vice versa.

What is a vape device?

Vape devices use simple circuits that contain a battery, a switch and a heating coil. The circuit is effectively a controlled short, with the power output from the battery used to create heat.

How to get the perfect vape experience?

After all, with most entry-level vape kits, all you need to do is: Check what wattage you can use with the coil in your device. Adjust your wattage and airflow until you get the vapour, flavour and throat hit you need. Some people want to know more to get the perfect vaping experience.

Why do vapes burn out faster?

You will need to increase the voltage to increase the wattage and get a better vape. Because lower resistance coils use more wattage, they tend to generate more heat. This means they often burn out quicker than a higher resistance coil would.

What is the resistance of a sub ohm coil?

The term sub-ohm, while still used, is not as relevant as it used to be. Coils below 1 ohm are common, and coils with a resistance of 0.8 ohms are often used for Mouth-to-Lung vaping. Even lower resistance coils, such as 0.15 coils, are often used for cloud vaping.

How does variable wattage work?

The variable wattage device will then automatically adjust the power going through the atomiser (the voltage) to produce the power output you need (the wattage).

What affects vapour and throat hit?

The resistance of your coil is not the only thing that affects vapour, flavour and throat hit. It also depends on the amount of power flowing through your coil. There are two common types of vape batteries which allow different amounts of power to flow through your coil. These are variable voltage and variable wattage.

What is variable wattage battery?

Variable wattage batteries, unlike variable voltage batteries, allow you to adjust the overall heat output of your vaping device. A variable wattage battery does so basically in the same way as a variable voltage battery. The main difference is that while a variable voltage battery can lead to different wattage outputs based on the resistance of the coil even when voltage is kept constant, a variable wattage battery should be able to adjust for changes in coil resistance. It does so by reading the resistance of your coil and then adjusting the voltage accordingly.

What is a fixed voltage battery?

Fixed voltage batteries are the weirder category, since they are usually used either by total beginners or by vaping enthusiasts. A regular convenience store cigarette-like e-cig, for example, will contain a fixed voltage battery; that should be pretty self-evident, given that there’s usually no way to adjust anything on it. There are other e-cig kits that use fixed voltages (as well as fixed resistances), and these kits are some of the best kits for vaping beginners.

What is the difference between voltage and potential?

Voltage is the core determining quality of a battery. It basically denotes the difference in electric potential between one end of the battery and the other. Electric potential in turn, is the amount of electric energy that a battery may or may not actualize. Usually, and certainly in the context of vaporizers, higher voltage will lead to a higher energy output. The most important thing to keep in mind here is that voltage is a function of the battery. Thus, in order to control voltage, you need the right kind of battery. Voltage is usually measured in volts.

What is resistance in vaporizers?

Unlike voltage, resistance is a function of the heating unit of each vaporizer. Electrical resistance, analogous to resistance in other contexts, is the degree to which a particular part of an electrical circuit impedes the flow of electrical current. Various materials exhibit different levels of electrical resistance; cotton, for instance, is so high resistance that current cannot flow through it at all, while highly conductive materials used for electrical exhibit very little resistance and thus lead to very little loss of energy along the way. In a vaporizer’s electrical circuit, energy flowing from the battery to the heating coil and back to the battery will encounter an area of increased resistance in the coil, which is made of a high-resistance material, forcing it to slow down and basically crowd up in the area of the coil. This slowed, “crowded” electric energy is what actually heats up the coil. Resistance is usually measured in Ohms.

Can you vape with mechanical mods?

If huge clouds of delicious vapor are what you’re looking for, your best options are going to be mechanical mods paired with the appropriate battery and a rebuildable atomizer. Of course, this will take a little more work on your part than simply pulling a vaporizer out of a kit and starting to vape, but, hey, at this point you’re probably treating vaping as much as a hobby as it is a relaxing replacement for smoking.

How many volts does a vape battery have?

They provide nominally 3.7 volts of power, 4.2 volts when fully charged and slowly discharge when used. Once the vape battery is discharged below approx 3 volts, they must be charged again.

How many charges does a vape battery need?

Approximate number of recharges a vape battery can undergo before it’ll no longer hold a charge. Duty cycles can be as high as 500 charges but will vary depending on the specific battery type.

What is the anode of a vape battery?

Most external vape batteries are Lithium Iron (li-ion) and consist of three parts: the cathode (+), the anode (-), and the electrolyte (bit in the middle). The anode of all 18650 li-ion batteries is basically the same; carbon/silicon and graphite.

What is the circuit board on a vape battery?

Batteries have a small circuit board, usually on the bottom of the vape battery, that stops the charging or discharge of the battery in certain circumstances, such as Over-Charge, Over-Discharge and Short-Circuit. These tend to be slightly longer because of the circuitry and are normally classed as ICR.

What is an unprotected battery?

Unprotected batteries are normally classed as IMR or INR. Both Protected and Unprotected batteries come in either ‘Flat Top’ or ‘Button Top’. This means that the positive electrode (end) of the battery is either Flat or Button, with most mods using the ‘Flat Top’ type.

Why does my phone battery overheat?

Using a different cable to that which your device came with can damage your battery. This is because the cable may have a higher voltage than your battery which will cause your device to overheat.

How long does a 3000mAh battery last?

A 3000mAh battery can run 3 Amps for 1 hour before full discharge.

Variable Voltage Output

This is the actual power going through from the vape into the vape cartridge or chamber. While there are some that allow you to adjust the voltage level, other vapes have the same steady level coming out without the ability to be adjusted.

Temperature Control

While this is technically the same as the variable voltage discussed in the previous category, now you are reading measurements in temperature which is mostly common in box mod vapes, which always have a ton of features to begin with.

Battery mAh Capacity

The definition of mAh is basically just a measurement for how much energy a battery can store. The higher the mAh, the longer the vape will last after the vape is fully charged.

Safety Features

Some of the more useful safety features on a vape will automatically shut off your device after a short period of inactivity to ensure you do not inadvertently either start a fire, drain your battery, or damage your unit.

Vape Cartridge Sensing

This feature is sort of a safety feature in terms of helping to prevent vape cartridges from getting inadvertently burnt out. While some vape batteries like the SteamCloud box mod will send you messages related to the attached vape cartridge, other models feature similar capabilities.

Display Screens

These are meant to simply inform you of all relevant information regarding your vape, from temperature readouts to battery life. While not all vapes have this type of sophisticated feature, many offer simple ways to inform you when it is time to charge the battery, such as a light color going off.

Buttons vs Dials or Apps

Controlling the temperature or other features is usually done with some sort of button or dial, while other devices utilize more sophisticated technology that incorporates the use of apps from your smartphone to track session lengths, haptic feedback, voltage, and vape temperature settings.
