For the purposes of this tutorial we will use organic cotton as our example. Since cotton is one of the most popular wicks, and other wick types tend to mimic the look and feel of cotton, this is a good place to begin.
Other Techniques
There are certainly other techniques out there to help you with wicking. If you choose to purchase wicks such as ekowool or stainless steel that come in a rigid mesh form, you may want to wrap your coil around the mesh when you are building instead of building the coil separately.
Maintenance
Now that you’ve got the hang of wicking your own vape, it’s time to talk about maintenance. Each of the above wicking materials has its own lifespan, but you need to be paying attention to your wicks so you’ll know when their time is up.

The best way I can teach you how to make your own vape pen is to teach you exactly how each aspect of it works.
Step 3: How I Made My Vape Pen
This will be brief, as how I made mine will most likely not be like how you will make yours. I started with my spare phone battery (which was awesome because I can charge my pen with any android/kindle charger XD), and I took it apart and found the positive and negative terminals on the circuit board that originally led to the usb female output.
Step 4: DIY E-juice!
This gets me excited. I have been nonstop trying tons of different combinations for bigger clouds or stronger flavor, and it's really quite fun. There are a billion tutorials out there for this, so I won't go into too much detail, but I use CVS brand Glycerin. Make sure that whatever glycerin you use, is USP (pure) and also vegetable glycerin (VG).

There are two ways to mix DIY e-juice, and each comes with a set of pros and cons.

E-juice calculators: an essential tool
If you want to mix accurately and have replicable results, you will need to use a vape juice calculator. A calculator simplifies the whole process by giving you all the info you need, be it the amount of nicotine needed to reach your favorite strength, or how much from each ingredient you will need to end up with a bottle of tasty 70/30 e-juice.

Post mixing: what to do after you make your juice
Labeling – Label your mixes with the following: VG/PG ratio, nicotine level, flavor percentages, and date created. Do this immediately. You’d be surprised how many beginners don’t, only to be stumped when they find a perfect blend but with no way of recreating it. Save your recipes in a notebook, spreadsheet, or on e-liquid-recipes.com.

Cellucotton Rayon Fibers
This is my new favorite wicking material for vaping. Make sure to get the 100% Rayon Cellucotton, they also offer cotton Cellucotton but in your e-cigarette you want the wick from the Rayon kind.
Japanese Organic Cotton pads (Koh Gen Do)
This is another form of cotton that you can use for e-cig wicks. The most popular brand is Koh Gen Do but there are some copycat brands. They're made from cotton that has not been chemically treated, bleached, or pigmented.
Ekowool Wick
Even though Ekowool is made of silica fibers it's very different from Chinese-made Silica wick. One of the huge benefits of Ekowool is that it's braided, leaving a hollow tube through the center.
Stainless Steel Mesh
Used primarily for genesis-style atomizers, because it's conductive it's not recommended for Rebuild-able Dripping Atomizers.
