Why do vape coils have cotton?
Most vape coils are made with cotton because it's perfect for soaking up e-juice and holds it really well while still allowing air to be drawn through. However, if you haven't vaped for a while or you're just switching to a new liquid or coil, the cotton can be extremely dry. By soaking the wick in e-juice before you start vaping, you'll eliminate any risk of that dreaded 'dry hit' This is as true for those using traditional cartomizers as it is for those with newer mods. The trick is let your e-juice sit in the tank for a good 5-10 minutes at least before you take your first hit.
Does e juice burn faster?
High wattages allow you to burn through e-juice at twice the speed. It may offer bigger and better clouds, but at the cost of longevity - your vape sessions won't last as long. Once the e-juice runs out the wick will dry and result in a dry hit.
Give your vape tank a flick
You may have seen experienced vapers giving their vape tanks a quick flick when they break out their vaping kit. A sharp downward flick can help clear the coil of any excess liquid, making for a much nicer vaping experience.
Fire up your battery
Another great tip is push the button and fire up your battery for a few short bursts before you start to vape. This will help the the excess liquid evaporate before you begin your vape session. If there's excess liquid in there, you'll hear a popping when you fire up the battery.
Don't over-prime
If you've been vaping for a while you probably know about priming. Priming the coil means dropping some e-liquid directly onto it to saturate the wick and get the biggest bang for your buck in terms of flavour.
Watch your vape tank
Any vapor that hasn't been inhaled will naturally condense and rest in your vape tank's centre post or mouthpiece. There's a risk it might then run down and back into the coil, potentially leading some nasty spitback when you go for your next inhale. To avoid this, simply make sure your vape tank is cleaned and dried at regular intervals.

Had to make this account and try to help people out because there was not a good solution for this I could find online currently. I had this problem shortly after getting my Vaporesso Revenger mini mod. After reading similar problems online, I tried cleaning all threads in the tank and coil and reassembling.

Might it be that the mod or the tank have an inappropriate sized or spaced 510 pin? Maybe one pushes the other in and then it doesn't go back all the way?

While I'm glad you found "your fix" I must say that the reasons for atomizer short can be many and varied although most certainly not having the pin screwed in all the way is going to cause a problem, most likely, but I suspect that is not the solution to each and every atomizer short that happens, although I'm glad you have found your fix, which is making sure the pin is making contact with the mod, which pretty much HAS to happen and the rest are also various sorts of means to make sure that connection is not being blocked..
