You don't need to remove that grommet thingy if you don't want to. A very good, very long hot water bath cleans it Ok. I've done it both ways and never had much of a difference.

The only time I will remove the grommet is when my juice is brown and nasty after about a month. These will dry burn pretty well, and last another month!!
