How do you build lower ohms when building coils?

To lower the resistance of your coil, you can use a thicker wire. If you apply the same power to two wires of the same length but different thickness, the thicker wire will heat up more slowly. To reach a similar temperature in the same time with a lower resistance coil (thicker wire), you need to provide more power.

Single Coil

I really prefer 24-gauge wire for single coils. I also prefer to wrap coils with a 3mm inner diameter. They are easier to build that way, and give lots of space for wicking and a bit of extra surface area. For the best compatibility across devices, I tend to prefer a target resistance of .15ohms – .25ohms.

Dual Coils

I prefer 26-gauge wire for dual coils. It has a higher resistance per inch than 24-gauge, and it’s easier to hit the target resistance across the two coils. You are shooting for the same target resistances that you are with a single-coil: 0.15 – 0.25ohms, and again keep it under .4ohms at a maximum.

What is a parallel coil?

In essence, a parallel coil is made out of two or more wires wrapped next to each other. Resistance is divided by the number of wire strands, so make sure you are aware of your device’s limits when building parallel coils. For beginners, a dual parallel 26-gauge Kanthal coil would be a nice starting point.

What kind of wire is used for coils?

There are five common types of wire material that are used for coil building. Among these five, only stainless steel wire can be used for both wattage control vaping and temperature control mode vaping – a one of a kind feat.

What is Kanthal wire?

Suitable only for wattage mode vaping, kanthal wire is made from a ferritic iron-aluminum alloy. Due to the presence of aluminum this wire roll is immune to oxidation and rust. Kanthal cannot be used for temperature control mode. The ease with which you can handle and manipulate kanthal makes it a perfect pick for new coil builders. It is soft enough to be molded effortlessly, but rigid enough to hold the coil-like shape. For these reasons, kanthal is the most commonly purchased wire among all wire types.

How to use wick in a smoke tank?

It is recommended to use organic cotton. Firstly, cut off a sufficient piece of the cotton with scissors then thread it into the coil, while making sure to leave half an inch of length on both sides of the coil. These ends should be long enough for proper fitting in the tank, but be careful as excessive wick could cause blockage in the smoke passageway.

What is stainless steel wire made of?

Stainless steel is made by combining chromium, nickel, and carbon. This alloy comes in different grades of purity, with varying percentages of the different metals. The most commonly used grade for stainless steel based vape wire is 316-grade SS, which is also used in the medical, pharmaceutical and food industries.

The vertical coil can be wicked on either the inside or outside, which is more commonly known as a ‘chimney’ coil. These coils have gained popularity, due to the improved airflow and flavor as more of the coil surface area is in contact with the wick.

Is NiChrome easy to build?

You do need to be aware that NiChrome is not quite as easy to build with as Kanthal. Primarily due to the fact it doesn’t hold its shape as efficiently.

I agree there are a lot of different opinions out there. That's why I was hoping to start a thread about titanium builds. Since everyone seems to have their own opinion. I've only done spaced coils so far. Kind of scared of developing any dioxide by pulsing the wire.

What is surgical stainless steel?

The most common "surgical steels" are 316 stainless and 440 and 420 stainless steels. There is no formal definition on what constitutes a "surgical stainless steel", so product manufacturers apply the term to refer to any grade of corrosion resistant steel. If you're thinking 316 SS, usually Chromium and Nickel are involved 316 stainless steel, also referred to as "Marine Grade Stainless Steel", is a chromium, nickel, molybdenum alloy of steel. 440 SS and 420 SS, also called "Cutlery Stainless Steel", are high carbon steels alloyed with chromium.#N#Titanium, however, is something being looked at.. But its resistance is fairly low, I do believe, and would take a temp controlled chip to work good. I believe there is such a chip coming out (GG? I think?)

Is SS like Kanthal?

SS (317,316)- appears to behave like Kanthal as far as working with it goes (coil building I just pulse rather than dry burn), has been used for a while in non TC applications, but it performs wonderfully in tc mode for compatible mods.

Is titanium wire hard?

Having used titanium wire in chainmaille work, it is VERY springy and quite hard. I should imagine that you would have to torch it extensively to get it to hold shape.

Is stainless steel coil safe?

Everything I've been able to find indicates that stainless steel is at least as safe as any other wire you might use for coils, if not definitively safer. People are swearing by SS workability, durability and clean taste. From what I can gather, it's not all that great on energy efficiency though.
