Can You vape on nichrome coils?

Again, take note that if you have (or suspect you may have) a nickel allergy, then you should not vape on nichrome coils, and maybe you should also avoid stainless steel. Kanthal has been the choice of most vapers for a longer time, due to its ease of use and higher resistance.

Is Kanthal wire good for coil builds?

Kanthal wire is especially good for single coil builds, which are not extravagant but get the job done when you’re not in the mood for something fancy and time-consuming. Add to that that it holds shape well when rewicking (which means that you can use a Kanthal coil a good long time) and have a fan favorite.

What is the working temperature of Kanthal wire?

Kanthal is a ferritic iron, chromium-alloy (FeCrAl) wire with bright annealed and oxidized surface. ◆ High consistent resistivity and good oxidation resistance. ◆ Higher maximum operating temperature of 1500°C (2730°F).

Is Nichrome wire safe to vape?

NiChrome is a good vape wire, but there are a few caveats to using it. Since it's an alloy of nickel and chromium, it has a really fast ramp-up time – it can heat up really fast, which means that complex coil builds can really benefit from it.

Is Nichrome better than Kanthal?

Nichrome behaves very much like Kanthal, but has lower resistance and heats faster. It is easy to coil and holds its shape well when wicking. Nichrome has a lower melting temperature than Kanthal, so you need to be careful when dry burning your coils—they will burn open if you aren't careful.

What wire is best for vape coils?

Stainless steel wire comes in a variety of grades but SS316L is medical and food grade and thus the most popular type used for vaping. Stainless steel wire heats up faster than kanthal or nichrome and that makes it the go-to wire for vapers seeking a quick and hard draw.

Why is Kanthal used for heating elements?

The reason why kanthal works so well for heating elements is because it behaves in an extremely predictable fashion when an electrical current travels through it. Kanthal immediately forms a protective layer of aluminum oxide when it’s heated, allowing it to remain extremely durable in long-term use.

What happens if you exceed the temperature limit on a mod?

Temperature control made it possible to set a temperature limit for your coil, and if the coil ever exceeded that limit, your mod would cut its power immediately to prevent a dry hit or burned wick. For temperature control technology to work, the electrical resistance of the coil needs to change when the coil heats up.

Why is temperature control important in vaping?

The main purpose of temperature control vaping is that it helps you avoid dry hits. Well, you can also do that yourself by vaping at a reasonable wattage and remembering to refill your tank. In that sense, temperature control vaping is an interesting gimmick, but it’s completely unnecessary for most people.

What material is used for RDA coils?

Nichrome is a common material for pre-wrapped RDA coils, but you won’t see it often in the world of sub-ohm tanks. When you’re shopping for sub-ohm tank coils, kanthal and stainless steel are the materials you’re most likely to see. Compared to kanthal, stainless steel has a slightly lower resistance and a slightly faster ramp-up time ...

Why do you need to replace a coil?

You’re replacing the coil because e-liquid residue has collected on the heating surface or because the wick is burned. The wire itself can last for an extremely long time.

Can you use nickel coils in wattage mode?

Nickel and titanium coils are intended for temperature control vaping only and should not be used in wattage mode. Even if the resistance of a nickel or titanium coil is within your mod’s supported range, wattage-based vaping is intended only for a coil that remains relatively stable in resistance during use.

Vape Resistance Wire Kanthal

If you are new to building coils, Kanthal is where you may want to start. There are many articles available on the net for you to peruse. We recommend learning as much as you can before attempting to build your own coils. Kanthal is commonly used in straight wattage mode.

Vape Resistance Wire NiChrome

This wire is also used for straight wattage mode. Nichrome is made of nickel and chromium. People with Nickel allergies should stay away from this wire. Nichrome has a faster “ramp up” time than Kanthal.

Vape Resistance Wire Stainless Steel (SS316)

This wire can be used in straight wattage mode but can also be used in TC (Temp Control) mode. SS316 also hold its shape very well. 316 SS is a medical grade wire which is the most common type of SS wire used in coil building. SS wire also has a faster “ramp up” time than Kanthal.

There are many other various applications: ◆ Rapidly heats with minimal ramp-up time. ◆ Nichrome has become the wire of choice for a vast majority of e-cigarette coils.

What is SS coil?

2. Stainless steel wire. Stainless steel (SS) is composed of chromium-nickel-carbon and is a highly functional metal. ◆ It can be used for wattage mode and temperature control – if mod supported.

Is a nichrome coil longer than a Kanthal coil?

In a word, this means that the life span of a nichrome coil will typically be shorter than that of a Kanthal coil. But, the temperature can be ignored as most devices will not exceed the melting point of either metal.

What is Kanthal coil wire?

Kanthal is the original coil wires and is still the most commonly used. Companies like SMOK release all their Sub-Ohm Tanks with Kanthal Coils, including the new TF Tank and the upcoming TFV16 Sub-Ohm. Kanthal is the most inexpensive coil wiring out there and it’s also extremely beginner-friendly. This material is very malleable, easy to work with, and can be found just about anywhere. For these reasons, basically all beginners should begin with Kanthal, until they learn more about their own preferences and gain some experience with various coil builds and shapes.

What is the most expensive coil wire?

The most expensive coil wires, titanium is understandably not a common choice. It’s costly, hard to find, and is surrounded by a certain degree of controversy regarding its safety. Titanium is highly flammable and, once it ignites, can be nigh-impossible to extinguish. For this reason, certain vape stores don’t even carry the material and it’s absolutely only recommended for the most experienced vape builders out there. It is, however, an excellent temperature control option for those with nickel allergies, as it is the only TC wire without any trace of nickel.

What is the best wire for a TC?

Stainless steel is one of the most popular wire materials – and for good reason. Stainless steel is the only wire which can be used in both wattage and TC mode, making it incredibly versatile. It’s also an extremely rugged and durable material, creating coils with incredibly long lifespans. Throughout the lengthy lifespan of these coils, you’ll also enjoy a great, clean flavor. Similar to Kanthal, stainless steel is easy to work with yet retains its shape well. Its ramp-up is also better than both the other Wattage Mode options. Innokin and Joyetech have released pre-built coils with stainless steel coil options.

Is nichrome better than Kanthal?

Nichrome is a more advanced option than Kanthal, and makes a great stepping stone when progressing through Wattage Mode wire options. While most people insist that they get a better flavor on Nichrome than with Kanthal, it’s also a bit more challenging to work with. Its lower heating temperature provides a nice quick ramp-up, but also make sit prone to melting and burning. It also lacks iron, which provides you with a pure and clean flavor. On the other hand, it contains a decent amount of nickel, to which some people have an allergy. For this reason, Nichrome is simply not an option for certain people. If it is, however, most intermediate to expert vapers opt for Nichrome over Kanthal.

Can you use pre-built coils for vaping?

At a certain point in most vapers’ lives, building coils becomes a more attractive option than continuing to use pre-built coils. For those currently enjoying the convenience of pre-made options, this might seem like a ton of work, but there are some good reasons to make the switch.

Does nickel work with TC?

Nickel is a bit of a niche material and only works with TC mode. Since many vapers prefer the simplicity of Wattage Mode, nickel is not the most popular option. It’s also a bit too soft to easily hold coil shapes and it’s extremely prone to melting and deforming during the wicking process. That having been said, nickel wires have the quickest ramp-up time of any option out there and it’s been known to provide excellent flavor.

Which is better, Kanthal or Nichrome 80?

The wire you like is going to vary from person to person. The benefits of Kanthal are it is more sturdy, it can take more heat, and a lot of people find it easier to wrap with because it stays in place better. Nichrome 80 heats up faster, loses its heat faster, and doesn't contain iron.

What is the melting point of Kanthal?

Nichrome 80 has a melting point of about 2,462 °F while Kanthal has a melting point of about 2,732 °F. While in practical applications, you are very unlikely to see a temperature that high.

What is nichrome 80 made of?

Nichrome (specifically Nichrome 80) is made from nickel and chromium blends. Kanthal is an iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloy. The important difference to note here is that the Nichrome wire contains no Iron. Some people say they can taste a difference.

Does nichrome 80 heat up faster?

Nichrome 80 heats up faster, loses its heat faster, and doesn't contain iron. Nowadays, some people are even mixing the two in advanced builds like claptons, aliens, etc. Whichever you choose, know that KP is going to deliver you the best quality wire, at the best price, in the fastest time.

Vape Wire Types – 1. Kanthal A1

Often referred to as A1 Kanthal. This is probably the longest running wire used for vaping. Most pre-made coil heads are made of A1 and it’s a great option for new builders. It’s also the best option for people with a nickel allergy as most of the other types of metal have some nickel in them.

Vape Wire Types – 2. Nickel

Often referred to as Ni200 Nickel. This was the first wire used for temp control when it was a new feature. It was good due to its high change of resistance. It’s become an outdated wire now and there’s no reason to use it anymore.

Vape Wire Types – 3. Titanium

Often referred to as Ti. This is the second wire to be used for temp control. It kind of took the place of Ni200 wire making it outdated. Not as high of a resistance change as Ni200 but more than high enough and was a little easier to work with and a little higher resistance than Ni200 wire.

Vape Wire Types – 4. Nichrome

Often referred to as Ni80 (not to be confused with Nickel which is Ni200 ). Nichrome has cut into the popularity of A1 wire. Ni80 has the same limits as kanthal since it can’t be used in temperature control mode but offers lower resistance than A1, making it a popular choice for people who use mechanical mods.

Vape Wire Types – 5. Stainless Steel

Often referred to as SS wire. Stainless steel comes in several grades. The most common is SS316 or SS316L but also SS317, SS304, and SS430. Most commonly used in vaping is SS316 or SS316L wire (no difference for vaping purposes). SS316 is an excellent wire as it has many advantages over others on this list.

Vape Wire Types – 6. NiFe

NiFe is a nickel-iron alloy so yes contains nickel so not for those allergic. It’s available in a few grades most commonly NiFe 70 or NiFe 52. NiFe has many advantages over the wires listed above and none of the disadvantages. Like SS wire, it’s universal and can be dry burned, used in power mode and used in temp control mode.

Conclusion

So those are the main vape wire types, so how do you choose which one is right for you? I’ll try and make it as simple as possible. If you are allergic to nickel, then A1 is your only choice. For Temp Control vapers, SS (specifically SS316) is the way to go. It’s much more available than NiFe wire and much better and safer than Ni200 or Ti wire.

I'm sure it's been asked but what are the main advantages of Kanthal wire over nichrome?

DonG Super Member ECF Veteran

aside from the higher temperature tolerance (which increases durability, a good thing); some have said it gives better flavor, sometimes noticing a metallic taste from nichrome but not from the equivelent size of kanthal.

That is pretty much what I am thinking. Neither the temp tolerance nor tensile strength are very important as for this application, there is very little chance of getting anwhere near the upper limits.

BJ43 Vaping Master Verified Member ECF Veteran

The laws of thermodynamics, metallurgy, expansion, and creep are pretty complicated, If we only heated these coils to 300 F, they would last a very long time. The reason for coils breaking is because of overheating. Just dry burn too long and they will all pop, and when they get bright orange they are way over 300F.

LucentShadow Super Member ECF Veteran

I don't see any clear advantage between the two for our purposes, based upon what I have read. I like nichrome 34-36 gauge. I see that many who use kanthal use 32 gauge.

WillyB Vaping Master ECF Veteran

Interestingly, after performing a dry burn, the resistance went right back up to normal.
