How do you calculate the length of a coil on a flat surface?

To obtain the coil length we have to divide the result by the section of the coil determined by coil width and thickness. The coefficient 1000 is used to compensate the dimensions in [mm] with the length in [m]. For example, a coil with OD = 1600mm, ID = 508mm and T = 0,6mm results in a length of 3010 meters.Nov 14, 2016

How do you count coil wraps?

When you input the inner diameter of the coil, the outer diameter is simply the inner diameter plus twice the wire thickness. The circumference of your coil is then by multiplying the outer diameter with π, and we have length of a single wrap.

What is macro coil?

Macro: a macro coil build is a coil that has an inner diameter that’s 2.5 mm and above. The bigger the inner diameter of the vape coil, the higher its resistance, and vice versa. Likewise, the thicker the gauge of wire used, the lower the resistance will be.

Why do you need to have two coils?

When doing a dual coil build, it’s essential for both coils to be identical in size and form, to ensure that they heat up properly. Dual-coil builds obviously create more vapor than a single coil of the same specs, but require double the power to perform.

What do you use to pinch coils?

Wire: any of the vaping wires would do. Flush cutters: wire cutters that can cut close in small spaces. Ceramic tweezers: to pinch your coils while pulsing. Fine tip tweezers: to fluff your cotton and place it inside the wick ports. Small metal rod: a small screwdriver, or coiling tool.

What is a parallel coil?

In essence, a parallel coil is made out of two or more wires wrapped next to each other. Resistance is divided by the number of wire strands, so make sure you are aware of your device’s limits when building parallel coils. For beginners, a dual parallel 26-gauge Kanthal coil would be a nice starting point.

Kanthal is a popular wire. Many vapers favor Kanthal because it is easy to work with and it resists oxidation. If you are new at coil-building, this is a great wire to start with. It is not springy so it can easily hold its shape. It is also inexpensive and available from most suppliers.

Is titanium bad for vaping?

The use of titanium is a frequently debated topic in the vaping world. Titanium releases titanium dioxide when heated over 1130F, which is toxic to humans. Titanium has a stable TCR though. This means that if you have a functioning TC mod, you need not to worry about titanium dioxide poisoning.

How many strands of wire are needed for a coil?

This will enable you to select either a single strand of wire, or up to four strands running parallel/twisted. The most commonly used is a single strand, however, using more than one strand will reduce the overall resistance or increase the surface area of the coil.

Is each wire type different?

Each wire type has slightly different properties, therefore it’s important that you select the correct type of wire that you’re using, otherwise the overall resistance or wraps shown in the results section won’t be correct.

It’s also A LOT cheaper than buying pre-made coils from vape brands like SMOK for use inside a sub-ohm tank.

Single Coil

I really prefer 24-gauge wire for single coils. I also prefer to wrap coils with a 3mm inner diameter. They are easier to build that way, and give lots of space for wicking and a bit of extra surface area. For the best compatibility across devices, I tend to prefer a target resistance of .15ohms – .25ohms.

Dual Coils

I prefer 26-gauge wire for dual coils. It has a higher resistance per inch than 24-gauge, and it’s easier to hit the target resistance across the two coils. You are shooting for the same target resistances that you are with a single-coil: 0.15 – 0.25ohms, and again keep it under .4ohms at a maximum.

Calibrating your device

Before you start vaping on your new Ti coils, you need to calibrate your device. Let your coil cool back down to room temperature. Five to ten minutes should be plenty of time to let them cool. Screw-in your RDA and lock in the atomizer resistance (older DNA40 devices do not have an atomizer lock feature.

I think part of the equation that matters to me when deciding how or what to build is not addressed in your post. Airflow, where its coming from and how much. With your magma, do you like a tight draw or open? Wicking material can also play a part in the decision process, i.e.

I have found that longer coils will produce better flavour as there is more wick touching the coils and therefore been vaped! Usually i build duel coils at 0.6 ohms with 26 awg Nichrome with a 2mm diameter is aprox 8 wraps with japanese cotton great flavour, over loads of vape IMO.
