Intro
Nothing is worse than looking forward to a tasty mouthful of vapor only to be met with a nasty, burnt flavor meeting your taste buds. A vape that tastes burnt can ruin a vape session and can be infuriating to fix.
Burnt Hits vs. Dry Hits
Before determining why your vape creates a burnt flavor, you need to determine that what you're experiencing is a burnt hit. Dry hits are often confused with burnt hits, but they are very different experiences that have very different solutions.

Complimentary Flavours
This is something we all know about, but as new vapers it might be something we didn't think would affect the taste of our e-cigarette. What I'm talking about here is the same thing as brushing your teeth before having a cup of tea, or on the other side of the coin, having a glass of red wine with your steak.

Flavour Fatigue
I think flavour fatigue is the main reason for what people call 'Vapers Tongue', when vapers can't taste any flavour in their e-liquids. We are essentially bombarding our taste-buds with relatively strong flavours all day and sometimes I think we just need to give them a rest.

I'm having this persistent problem with my ProTank type devices. I keep getting this nasty metallic taste when I vape. It tastes a lot like the smell of really old, nasty guitar strings; like there's some corrosion going on in there. I can even smell it when the tank is detached from my mod.

Sorry to hear your metallic taste issue. Can't tell you what the root cause - taste is very subjective. I can give a few guesses:

The metallic taste is almost certainly the coil and wick in the head. If it's metallic and harsh when you hit it, there's a hot spot on the coil where wire isn't sufficiently soaked in juice. Try firing the head without the tank or the knurled stem on your coil assembly, just screw your head onto the base and wiggle off the stem.

I agree with the last two posters. I had a Protank Mini V1 and a Protank 2 with metal flat drip trip. Terrible metallic taste and it felt like it was hurting my tongue. Went to a acrylic normal drip tip and boom no metallic taste and awesome flavor to vape again. The slight metallic taste also could be from the coil head.

I've tried thoroughly cleaning them including a dry burn to get off any gunk. When I dry burn it, the ends of the coil never light up, even when I poke and nudge at them with a knife tip.
