If it does short, you'll know it because the battery will either rip itself open or explode violently. Both failures can cause death or serious injury. No it will not work when it is shorted.

yea.. I once accidentaly put in a battery the wrong way. took the battery out sometime later and realized. It had been firing fine... but be careful. if it doesnt fire the other way, likely somethig wrong with the connection

Ok, let me muddy this with a question. Reo...mech mod but somewhat different than a tube mech. On the bottom is a spring, like many flashlights. And firing button is on top so it pushes the positive contact onto the top of the battery. I assumed it only would work with the battery positive up, and batterynegative on the spring.

I always run mine with the pos end facing up for safety reasons. Can't be too careful plus those batteries can get a bit expensive.
