What is MTL coil?
MTL refers to the beginner-friendly method of vaping, which involves slowly drawing vapour into the mouth before pausing and inhaling it into the lungs. Mouth to lung coils are high resistance (1.0 Ohm or higher), which means they produce less vapour but are able to provide enhanced e-liquid flavour. Due to their low vapour production, MTL coils also tend to last longer.
What is DTL vaping?
DTL is considered to be the more advanced method of vaping, which involves inhaling vapour directly into the lungs with one 3-5 second long draw. Sub Ohm / Direct to lung coils are low resistance (less than 1.0 Ohm) with the ability to produce larger vapour clouds.

What is coil gunk?
Coil gunk is residue that collects on your coil as you vape. Although almost all of the flavoring ingredients used in e-liquid have the potential of creating residue, sucralose is by far the biggest contributor to coil gunk because, unlike most vape juice ingredients, it doesn’t vaporize fully. When you apply heat to sucralose, it caramelizes and burns. It becomes very sticky – almost like burning sugar – and creates a thick coating on your atomizer coil. The coating grows thicker and thicker until vaping becomes unbearable, and at that point, you have no choice but to replace the coil.

You’re most likely burning your wick. A single long puff might not ruin your coil instantly, but over time, it’ll definitely shorten the coil’s life. When you replace your tank’s coil, look at the etching on the side of the coil. You’ll see a recommended wattage range.

That’s because VG is much thicker than PG. Therefore, a 50/50 VG/PG blend – such as the blend used for most nicotine salt e-liquid – is fairly thin, while an e-liquid with an 80/20 VG/PG ratio is much thicker. A bottle of e-liquid will usually specify its VG/PG ratio on the label.
Why are my wicks burning out?
If you look through the top of the coil and see that the metal wires look black and sludgy – not clean and white – your coils are burning out because of coil gunk caused by sucralose residue. If the wires still look white, though, it’s likely that you’ve burned your wick.

I have been building for a long time but never took the time to correctly make sure my coils were tight. I would be as careful as I could when I was putting the leads through and tightening the post but after that I'd get impatient and just throw some cotton through and call it a day.

Oh, so you have a micro coil. The youtube videos are really helpful. Basically get a pair of tweezers and make the coil red, let go of the power and lightly squeeze. Let it cool while squeezed and do it again. Just don't power it while you have the tweezers touching the coil or you'll short it. They make ceramic tweezers to be safer.

You can simply opt for not making them that tight. I prefer it loose, first because I don't have to heat them up to sqeeze them together and second because I like the idea of cotton being "free" not only to soak up liquid but also to let it go (comparatively) freely as vape.

You also might consider a Kuro Koiler or Coilmaster tool. Both will make very nice, tight micro coils.

I tighter them on initial Posting, then adjust the Coil to position level and proper spacing for Air Inlets (obviously depending on AFC design & placement on RDA / RBA ), then check Post Screw Tightness again, then test fire several times starting at quick bursts getting longer on burst duration as the Coils "come in" until fully and evenly glowing, then readjust Coils if necessary & re-check Post Screw tightness..

Rip Trippers has some great videos on how to make coils and the proper techniques involved. When firing a coil the first time, don't throw a lot of power at it and don't try to get the coil red the first time.
